Chatting in #terrafusion: _|_ = Me cyBeAr = The man with the interesting ideas Vondur = Vigil Vigil = Killes Shambler = Vondur ... read in the newspaper that cab drivers get a center in the brain enlarged as they get more experience and learns how to naviagte the streets better and better <_|_> yes * _|_ read that too the center has a lot to do with navigation the question is do we get that too from navigating quake maps? <_|_> hmmm <_|_> well <_|_> you do learn navigation in quake maps, but not nearly as much unless you play like thousands and memorise them all they're small but we play a lot of them Yes! Navigation! Like, pressing keys and stuff, y'know? <_|_> but theoretically, if you play and memorise enough, you should do that and no only quake maps tons of diffrent game worlds <_|_> yeah but a quake map is like memorising the inside of your house and what effects does mapping have on the brain <_|_> you'd have to memorise a lot to increase the brain size <_|_> well <_|_> i'm sure it improves the brain <_|_> very much so Creativity? <_|_> but not necessarily in the same way as enlarging the "navigation nodes" <_|_> but yeah....memorising game worlds....you do navigate more than perhaps the real life average <_|_> apart from cabbies and people who drive and/or walk a lot <_|_> interesting, cybear Bus drivers, maybe? you know what from playing doom so much you must develop certain capacities You know how to aim! <_|_> vXXX: they have very limited routes fighting ones But they do drive around a lot, and in different buses with different routes laying doom and quake , especially doom , must develop the reflex+preditction+coordination+navigation center And the routes may change heeeeeeeeey these games are good for us :) <_|_> not really, vxxx <_|_> not nearly as much as cabbies as the bus route is fixed That is true <_|_> thing about maps and even games, is that the path is fairly obvious, you don't have to learn the way as it's fairly straightforward - you don't have to distinguish it from hundreds of other roads/buildings/areas like cabbies do *** Shambler has quit IRC (Azure Agony) Yer a cabbie? *** _|_ is now known as Shambler no well "no" as in "no i am not telling you any real life information you turd" *** Vigil is now known as Killes Predictable *** Vondur is now known as DanTheFryingPan killes your contribution to this otherwise interesting discussion is nothing but a shameless and unsubtle p1mp for playing doom, is that right?? :) doom develops many skills :) most gamers have played tons of games and know how to navigate in most of them yes i also lernt to adapt to gameplays in no time but what they have to navigate, in terms of finding routes, is very easy and hard to get lost in Very linear routes in most games for example, e1m1 of quake, once you've got to the exit, it's very easy to remember that as there aren't 100 alternative routes :) and i'm not sure how much people conciously remember not all games are like that for many SP games, you'll tend just to play and forget the route you took okay, well i mean fps games generally obviously stuff like, uh GTA or midtown madness will be different But if it's a really great game, you remember the game and the routes but the routes don't take much remembering adventure/rpg games and other games have often many routes yeah, true well you *were* talking about quake originally in quake dm it's a very important to know everything about navigating a level yeah i agree for other games though....not that i actually play them I don't play many other games now, I don't really play that much at all but I have oh yeah bear - but the levels are simple, it's like remembering, i dunno, how to get around your house - rather than how to get around an entire city but a city isn't too complicated either heh it obviously is given the amount of knowledge the cabbies need... but with enough dm levels, you would increase your navigational database And the streets are complicated well I think that research was based on the london cabbies london is rather big yeah god my mind is full of knowledge of routes around dm maps i don't need to know!! argh a true gamer (which I'm not, at least not anymore) plays very many games * Shambler takes a spoon and starts removing bits of his brain it's important thought to think about that not eveyone learns so much.. yeah like a friend of mine that plays lots of video games and stuff, he never remembers how to navigate, both in rl and in games hehe depends on how attuned you are to navigating too * Shambler is very well attuned to navigating in games and irl When I try to go the toilet I always end up at our kithcen lol ...
