Deathmatch demos: Quake - Quake 2
Note: Working demo downloads! It seems http://www.3ddownloads.com/ have changed their download directory structures to something remotely sensible so the links to my demos should now work (albeit via an intermediate window which is typical of gaming download sites). The map downloads may well not work but I assume you have or can find those otherwise.
Introduction:
I've given up deathmatch (except for a bit of Quake and UT botmatch), but these are some old demos from about late 1998, when I used to play, on custom maps, some online and some LAN.
Note: I do not consider myself a "good" deathmatch player, but I do consider myself a "competent" one. I find these demos entertaining, but I do not want people to be mislead about my skillz. Watch the demos and judge for yourselves, but do not expect too much.
LAN Quake deathmatch demos:
How to play Quake demos:
1. Place the demo file in c:\quake\id1, and ensure the required map is in c:\quake\id1\maps.
2. Start Quake, go to the console and type: "playdemo demoname", where demoname is the name of the demo.
3. Hit the console key again to clear it off the screen.
Map: Basewalk: "BaseWalk".
Demo: BaseW1, 330k, 5 mins. 1on1 vs. KnifeMissile, won 10 - 1.
Comments: A vicious arena style map leads to a very fast game with lots of jumping around like a lunatic - a whole lot of fun =).
Map: Jndm6: "The Temple of the Sun".
Demo: TempSun1, 580k, 10 mins. 1on1 vs. KnifeMissile, won 7 - 4.
Comments: Heh - I whispered a few words to KnifeMissile about controlling the Quad and RA, and he managed to provide a tougher and closer game, though I did give him a big chance
at one point. Another lovely map, too.
Map: Jrdm2: "Foot Massage".
Demo: Jr2demo, 990k., 10 mins. 1on1 vs. KnifeMissile, won 19 - 7.
Comments: Cool game, plenty of action, lots of rocket jumps (mostly useless!!). Makes good use of a fast paced map with no buggering around, just good fragging - see what you think.
Map: Ztndm5: "Painkiller".
Demo: Pain1, 260k, 5 mins. 1on1 vs. KnifeMissile, won 10 - 0.
Comments: Another vicious map, another fast game, with some amusing kills and good rocket jumps.
Quake II deathmatch demos:
How to play Quake II demos:
1. Place the demo file in c:\quake2\baseq2\demos, and ensure the required map is in c:\quake2\baseq2\maps.
2. Start Quake II, go to the console and type: "demomap demoname.dm2", where demoname is the name of the demo. The ".dm2" suffix is necessary.
3. If the demo starts with the console half down, bring down the console again, and retype the command.
Map: Beta2dm: "Beta2dm".
Demo: OTTA4, 560k, 20 mins. 1on1 vs. OTTA, won 22 - 8.
Comments: Once OTTA learns the map a bit, this turns into a really fun game, with some cool rocket duels in the main arena, and quite a few hilarious kills. A great game.
Map: Dlite: "D-lite".
Demo: D-lite1, 600k, 15 mins., 2-6 person FFA , came a close second with 24 frags.
Comments: Quite a funky FFA game, though I do lose the plot in some places - in others I'm doing quite well.
Map: Finkodm2: "Hell's Kitchen".
Demo: Phlegm (2 demos), 540k, 9 mins. 1on1 vs. KnifeMissile, won 10 - 4.
Comments: A fun LAN game on a cool map, that really flows well.
Demo: DooWah1, 440k, 15 mins. 1on1 vs. DooWahDiddy, lost 5 - 10.
Comments: The best game I've ever lost, hehe =). Probably due to me running the server, so I have a smooth game, but DooWah is some opponent - still it was actually fun.
Map: Kick: "Kick the P.A.".
Demo: Kick1, 670k, 17 mins. 2-6 person FFA, won with 30 frags.
Comments: A really fun FFA game, with lots of variety and action. Just a cool and satisfying game.
Map: Mpq3: "Still of the Night".
Demo: OTTA3, 580k, 19 mins., 1on1 vs OTTA and small FFA, won 20 - 18.
Comments: A nice and appealing map, and an unusually close game with quite a bit of variety.
Map: Q2duel5: "Mortal Coil".
Demo: Carrot1, 230k, 10 mins., 1on1 vs. Carrot, won 10 - 3.
Comments: A much fruitier game than the score suggests, I'm struggling at one point but make a great comeback, and it turned out to be a lot of fun.
Map: Ztn2dm1: "Painkiller".
Demo: ZTN1, 340k, 11 mins., 1on1 vs [TGB]Nocker, won 8 - 2.
Comments: Cool conversion of a Quake1 map, and a good, satisfying game where I felt I was earning each frag.
