Question.
Just why HAS Shambler got a bathtub full of tree branches???
All will not be revealed in a forthcoming update...
And from when people were wondering:
<DaMaul> shambler update your website
<DaMaul> and tell us what youve been doing lately
<Vigil> Something to do with sheep, no doubt
No doubt in my mind either =).

Duh.
Forgot to post this yesterday. For those bemused by Killes week, and wondering why one person deserves consistent abuse, go spend some time in #terrafusion on a
Gamesnet.net IRC server when he's ranting away. For those just bemused by Killes himself, go read this caffeine based explanation - suddenly everything
is clear...

That lovable gangsta SCRAD has popped over for the weekend, so not much updating today. Maybe more tomorrow. I'll leave you with another truly pathetic and vindictive theme
week drawing to a well timed close:

Quake DM maps wot Shamblah likes:
Checked out and Obotted most of the recent maps, and added all the ones I like to my favourite Q1 DM maps list, go take a look for downloads and
author links. Here's what I thought of what I liked:
Gomdm4 was a pleasant surprises as I've never been keen on Gom's previous maps which all seemed well designed but
didn't inspire me. But Gomdm4's blue-tinged Q2 power style and clean designs appeal a lot more, and in particular I like the broad corridors and generally spacious atriums, because in a FFA
it's quite easy to avoid rockets and even fight back from respawning before getting good weapons. I reckon the fairly "stiff" layout would work well for teamplay too though I've never tried.
Auhdm1 impressed me straight away with it's malevolent greeness and oppressive, heavy designs and curved arches. I think it just uses Id textures and certainly makes those green
textures look very fresh. Some excellent vertical action here too, but unfortunately it needs some more clip brushes to avoid getting stuck in places.
Safe2 didn't really impress me when I first looked around it, nice enough Stecki textured map, but a poor man's Rcdm7, I thought. However, with a couple of bots in
there, it was a blast, lots of action and the tight design makes the frags flow thick and fast. Would be a good 1on1 map too I reckon.
Chesdm3 almost gives me a headache due to the luridly detailed texture scheme, but even so there are a lot of styles in this map that are very impressive. Playing with one bot, the
action doesn't really spread out much further than the RA and YA areas, but they give some good vertical action - and there's always lots of neat designs to look at =).
Ikdm9q1 is the antithesis of the above, with it's simple, clean, consistent, and very curvey style. Yet another cool, fresh looking map, again in a duel the action mostly focuses around
the YA and either RL, but still good fun.
Kjdm13, another Stecki textured map, better design and style than Safe2 I feel, with some great architectural touches such as nice pillars and a broken tunnel. Gameplay is
solid and well spread out in an FFA, but I prefer some of the other maps around.
Nacdm4 is a Q3A style piece, and yes of course it's much better than Q3A :P. Good design though not as sophisticated architecturally as other maps. Plays well in a duel though,
some good action around YA and GA areas, can be tactical too.
Other, recent, maps that aren't on my list list include GeN's
Reincarnation pack which I have and some maps look pretty cool but I haven't got round to playing it yet, and
Gandhi's Naked6 which looks funkier than previous Naked maps, but I played it and found the weapons
too sparse and the layout too stiff to be much fun for me - it seems really to be an expert's map. Which I am not :P. Anyway, what impresses me most about these recent maps is all the variety
of original (and not-so-original) styles, both for textures and designs - it's always cool to see people come up with fresh stuff even after four years. However, what I really want is for
people to be inspired enough to make Q1 SP maps in these fresh, innovative styles....any takers??

Irony
In the abscence of my views on current Q1 DM maps which I'll do tomorrow, read this from sCary's shack comments:
FreshView: "Yes, IRC is total, and complete, garbage."
AND THE SHACK COMMENTS AREN'T GARBAGE?? FUCK ME I NEARLY DIED!! That is enough irony to drown all the cunt0rs who post there 25,000 times over....Maybe the
truth should be told about their festering rectum of fetid spew:
<KillerRRRRRRRR> lol seen Shgashacks poll?
<Mindcrime> I try not to go there
<Mindcrime> you can lose IQ points by merely typing in the url

See, conclusive proof, posting on the shack boards is directly responsible for extreme cretinism. Like we needed the proof or anything...

This week...
...I have mostly been playing Quake botmatch. Checking out all the cool, recent, custom deathmatch maps, and having some fun doing so I must admit. Even though as
excessus says:
<excessus> playing with bots are like masturbation, while real deathmatch is... er... the real thing!
Well, more like single player is the real thing (not that most of #tf would know what that's like), and deathmatch is getting buggered in the men's toilets at a train station (and I suspect more
of #tf have experience of *that*).
HA!!
Anyway, some of these maps are real funky shit so I'll be bl33ting on about them a bit tomorrow.

Daikatana stuff:
I've updated the spektrum site, with some news about another single player mapper who's expressing interest
in making Daikatana single player maps, and another informative IRC chat log of, errr, PlanetDaikatana boss,
Gwog, talking nonsense. Again. And on the same subject, if you don't visit regularly, head over to PDKT and
check out the latest screenshots down the news page - looking mighty fine, especially that swamp shot. Mmmm, swampy....

The update....from....HELL!!
I hope this is enough incredibly arrogant spew for old Gwog. If it's not incredibly arrogant enough, forgive me, I'm out of practice :P. Anyway, been saving things up, and now I've got
some free time, here's an update. A big update. Read it.
"That" Unreal review...
...is none other than the complete 6 map Illhaven Saga!! Bow down!! As you might expect it's a bloody classic and Shambler ranks it as the second best Unreal level ever - *very* close
behind that Shrakitha thing. Thus it gets positioned on my recommended Unreal SP maps list, and just a bit further down is an older review that's been
delayed until this week: The very cool, intriguing Strange World episode, another definite recommendation. Both of the ratings on the list link to my reviews at
Nali City, of course, where this week I've also reviewed a couple of minor, mediocre levels: Nalicanyon1
and 2. In general Unreal single player releases are getting much sparser, but many of them are very good - quality over quantity, chaps =).
Cheese p1mpage.
TEAMCheese etc etc =). Last weekend, I was savouring a top notch Welsh cheese, but unfortunately, I forgot it's name, making p1mping a nameless cheese somewhat difficult. But never
fear, cheese fans: after an hour searching on the net, I found out this highly recommended cheese is called Harlech, a medium, semi-hard cheese which is flecked with parsley and
blended with horseradish to provide a satisfyingly pungent taste. For more information, head over to
Abergavenny Fine Foods - Welsh Cheese Range, which also features the excellent Y Fenni,
another TEAMCheese favourite.
Half-Life, patches, TFC, and a pile of arse:
I have Half-Life. I have some custom maps. I need to patch Half-Life to play those maps. Simple, one might think. Pile of arse more like, because to patch HL to the latest version, I am
forced, yes forced, to download a patch containing Team fucking Fortress cunting Classic. Right, I have no interest in TFC, I never had have any interest in TFC, and I never will have any
interest in TFC, so why the fucking hell do I HAVE to download it to get a patch?? What is so fucking difficult about releasing a full patch without TFC in it?? I don't want to waste time and
money downloading a 20+ meg patch, I don't want to waste the extra 15 seconds that installing TFC will take, and I don't want to waste 5 seconds immediately deleting the TFC folder. Well as
it turns out, as in this IRC rant, at least I can get Op. For. and immediately delete the offending mod from there, but it's still un-fucking-necessary.
Id don't insist on adding RA2 to any Quake2 patches, Epic managed to patch Unreal enough times without forcing us to have RealCTF, so why the fuck
Valve think they can arrogantly inflict 20 odd meg of TFC on us just because they got voted Game of the Year 85,000 times, is beyond me. Bastards.
Filth!!
The internet provides a wonderful opportunity for discussion and interaction of ideas with a wide variety of people....and Shambler just abuses that opportunity with depraved drivel like
this IRC filth. It's pathetic, revolting, and juvenile, and if I wasn't Shambler, I'd be writing to my ISP to complain about the accessibility of such rubbish. Hell, I
might even write anyway and try to ban myself... Or if that's too predictable, how about a spot of IRC golf?? Yup, the daft IRC chat logs are
back in action, respect to all the #terrafusion protagonists =).
Topics for discussion:
Time to exercise the brain cells and flex your "opinion nodes". Two forum topics that have got me quite interested recently have been the following:
"So ratings are on 20 now?", a firey discussion prompted by
Some complaining about the supposedly wildly inaccurate scores given to recent Unreal Tournament maps by the new reviewers at
Nali City. I don't know how accurate the scores are, but I know reviewing is a specific art and the accuracy of
reviews and scores is a serious topic for discussion. And,
"Which 5th episode would you like to see in a (Daikatana) mission pack??"
in which some p1mp called Shambler asks for suggestions for future Daikatana episodes, given that futuristic, medieval, ancient Greek and near future will be appearing
in the game - some pretty good suggestions so far. Go say your pieces...
"UDQ style" Unreal demos site:
Shambler set the ball in motion and some d00d called Grob is rollin' with it. He's been beavering away at
Quake done Quick style Unreal speedruns, where you carry your weapons, health and items through to the
next map, and eventually complete the entire game. This is NOT an official Unreal done Quick, as Unreal demo recording isn't remotely suitable, but on his own Grob's run all the maps
equivalent to an entire game run in 56:58, and you can download all the individual demos or one big zip at his site.
Might seem damn long, but there are some maps that involve excellent shortcuts and tricks - I'm impressed that he's done all the harder runs
suggested in my old runnable Unreal maps list (i.e. Dig and Ceremony), as well as coming up with a great new shortcut for Bluff. I've
watched the demos for those maps and Terraniux, all well worth getting as they contain the cooler tricks (embarrassingly, the Dig run was one I was trying for ages, but didn't realise
how accessible an important Shield Belt was....now it's been done already and of course I can't be arsed to run it unless I'm pioneering, so I'm kicking myself for missing out on that. Duh,
remember, Shambler, explore the f00kin' map for items properly...). Anyway, I've updated my Unreal speedrun pages to reflect this development.
P2 back in action.
Cunt0r-in-chief, Paul2 (ex-QMH) has been back on form at his
b0rk column. The latest one is an IRC wind-up of epic proportions (like you'll need at least 1/2 hour
to read the damn thing), and got me really LOLing by the end when everyone is shouting abuse. Worth a look if you've time to kill, start at the first log, half-way down the page.
Quake DM maps:
Okay, here's the deal: There have been some severely funky releases for Quake DM maps recently, and I've been doing fuck all about taking a look at them and giving them the Shambler view
on my favourite Q1 DM maps list - hell, I've been doing fuck all here in general. I'm might get round to whomming the old OBots back in if I feel inspired
enough, as I do like to keep
in touch with Q1 DM maps, but in the meantime, head over to PnFs and scan down their news until you find Q1
stuff (*sigh*, /me wonders if anyone who comes here doesn't go to PnF anyway...). This ain't a map site, okay, just my personal view, which I haven't been arsed to give recently (sighs of
relief, heh).
Killes week!!
Yes the start of one of those god-awful theme weeks, this time dishing out some well deserved insultation on the man they love to hate, Killes. An insult a day keeps the doctor away

Bleh.
Okay, it will be a bit longer before I update properly. Amazingly timed as this pops up just as I have a free weekend, I've now got to do a review of a major Unreal SP map, we are
talking majorly major with added major on top so you don't confuse it with any minor maps, and I want to do it right as always. Once I start making progress on that, I'll be able to do

Explanation:
My updates have been pretty rare recently....rarer than a farmyard animal that hasn't been violated by Bal, but not quite as as rare an intelligible comment by Killes =). The
reason: Stuff going on in Real Life™, meaning I'm away quite often and don't have the time to do as much on the PC. Nor, for that matter, the motivation - the net's been very quiet and little
has inspired me to rant and rave, and in the last month I've played a couple of old Q1 SP maps and that is about it, heh. I'm quite happy with this, but of course there's less funky shit here for
you lot, sorry - I do have a couple of projs planned, but no idea when I'll get round to them. Maybe I'll pick up the pace in the next few weeks, so just be patient and check back occasionally.
TEAMJungle Drum'n'Bass CD Reviews:
Yeah, this will be a regular I think =). Just one CD this time, but a phat one for sure, go get it junglists:
DJ Zinc - "Beats by Design E.P." (True Playaz). 12 tracks of consistently good jump up (apart from two downbeat tracks), with deep rollin' basslines, pacy beats that vary between
2 step and occasional Amens, and some melodious swirls on top. What's great about the Zinc style is that the beats are rarely pure ploddy 2 step - they have a bit more energy to keep up the
pace, and the basslines have a smooth, warm feel which makes a nice change from all the abrasive techstep stuff around.

A word of warning:
Going away again, so I'll leave you with a timely piece of advice....I can't believe I need to do this 'cos it should be bloody obvious, but: If you chat to me over IRC email me, ICQ me, whatever,
then you might well get quoted if you say something interesting, entertaining or amusing enough. You might just have noticed that this site has an arseload of
IRC chat logs, and might be able to deduce that you could end up in one of them. People occasionally complain about this, and of course I'm very understanding and
sympathetic....errr no that's a total lie, I'm a contemptuous sod as usual =). Seriously though, just live with it - it's only the net, think about it for a moment - just your opinions on the net, it's not
very important. This might just be my "don't give a fuck" attitude, but I don't think it matters much what you say on the net - it's not real life, it's not real life people, friends and family you're saying
it to - you don't like what goes on here, you can just hit the disconnect button. However, I'm not totally careless - I won't quote anyone where it could interfere with their professional or personal
status, and I am prepared to censor people's names if they ask. So now you know.
And as an example of quoting...
* Malevola gets out of his chair, walks over to shambles and strangles him until he is blue, fucking whore.
Heh....yeah I was being obnoxious for a change =).

Curious...
There's little to do for any of my review sites at the moment, and strangely enough, although I get annoyed when I have lots to do, with the usual shite motivation to get down and do it, and the
pressure starts to build up, I'm actually missing the satisfaction and sense of usefulness I get from doing reviews for the public (and indeed from doing major stuff at this site). Having set myself
up as a reviewer (THE reviewer, surely :P), I like my services being valuable to other people, to be able to contribute regularly to the scene - and without anything to review, I'm not getting that.
Heh, no doubt when loads of levels turn up at once and I'm burning out some reviews, I'll be headbutting the wall trying to make myself do them with the usual speed and precision...
The truth is out there:
Thanks to the SCRAD for this one. Possibly the most interesting thing I've read about Q3A (apart from what I've written, of course :P) is the
Gamespot Q3A review, because it's actually accurately critical of the game. Unlike
other reviews which have briefly considered all of Q3A's many, inescapable flaws, and then conveniently glossed over them for their overall rating of the game (presumably to avoid any
adversity from a bunch of blinkered Id fanatics, putting their own reputations before balanced reviewing), the Gamespot review, though limited, considers some of the major problems with Q3A,
and like any sensible player, acknowledges their detriment to the game. Well worth a read to get the truth on Q3A rather than the usual unconvincing crowd pleasing....even so, they didn't
mention the problems with the actual feel of the gameplay, which is my beef with Q3A.
And finally:
Excellent comment from girl_E_girl at the Nali City UBB, about the
philosophical IRC chat I mentioned there...
" with some of the people i've been encountering lately, i'm starting to wonder about the continuation of the mind after BIRTH!!!! :-) "
